Do you desire to take a course for the fun of learning something new? Would you like to change your career or start your own business? Is it time to finally complete your high school diploma or equivalency, HiSet (fka GED)? September 2017 our programs at RSU4 (Sabattus, Wales and Litchfield) & Lisbon School Department regionalized in hopes of building a strong community based program! Lifelong learning is for all ages because, “as long as you live, you keep learning how to live.” Whatever you choose, and wherever you choose to learn, our programs provide the opportunity to meet your goals. Our staff is here to guide you through the process, with motivation, to pursue your journey of creating a life you’ll be proud of! 

ADULT BASIC EDUCATION

 HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA (HSD)

RSU4 & LACE – Jim Palmer, Program Director   Adults who wish to earn credits through a combination of classes and home study may choose this option. Credits are earned through Adult Education and added to those earned in high school. Credits may be awarded for military service, work and volunteer services.  There is no charge for courses taken for high school diploma credit. Classes needed for completion are determined during a Transcript Analysis appointment. These need to be scheduled with our program director.

 HiSet TESTING

 If you are ready to complete your high school equivalency (HSE) then your first step will be to complete the pre-tests. Pre-tests scores are valid for one school year. If you began in one program, the information is  transferable between agencies. A Chief Examiner will discuss your scores and establish an ILP with you, after completing all 5 subject category pretests.   Official HiSet testing is done online, by appointment. The Chief Examiner will schedule sessions with you when you’ve demonstrated proficiency in each subject. 

Testing is offered throughout the school year.

Test taking strategies and skill building are offered to prepare students for successful completion of the HiSet tests. This course is appropriate for both HSE & HSD students needing additional practice before taking on specific academic requirements.   Learning Lab is offered throughout the school year. See the subject schedule below. Students will need to meet with the Learning Lab instructor prior to attending on a regular basis. 

RSU4: Mondays = Social Studies; Tuesdays = Math; Wednesdays = Science; Thursdays = ELA (Reading & Writing)

LACE: Tuesdays = Science & Math; Thursdays = Social Studies & ELA

REFRESHER CLASSES

Would you like to refresh your skills in any of the 5 subject categories: Math, Science, Social Studies or ELA? In this blended learning platform of online and paper assessments, we provide support for students that need to refresh their academic skills. In order to attend; intake is required. Classes are individualized and are on-going throughout the school year.

Cost: $35 for 6 weeks

Computer Basics Workshop

RSU4 & LACE – Jim Palmer

Overview of basic computer skills, an easy to use ‘roadmap’ to prepare students for daily use of the computer for communication. This is not a substitute for a full ‘typing class’. Keyboarding skills will need to be demonstrated at a 25 WPM minimum. Four main skill areas will be covered; Mouse skills, Navigation skills, Keyboarding skills & word processing skills. 

Computer lab time must be scheduled. Attendance is by appointment. 

This has a rolling enrollment and is $20.00 per session.

SAT PREP & PRACTICE

RSU4  – TBD

Develop study habits with a hands-on, face-to-face preparation and practice 6 week session. This class provides tools & techniques for the student to be most prepared. 

SAT test dates: October 1st, November 5th, & December 3rd

WORKFORCE & CAREER TRAINING & RETRAINING

MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

RSU4 & LACE – Online Training

If you plan to enter the medical field and need help learning medical terms, definitions and pronunciations, you can do so in just 10 weeks! This is an independent study, blended learning platform and on-going class throughout the school year. The registration cost includes a copy of the book, one-on-one discussion, paper testing and online quizzes. 

Call the office to register, class usually begins within 2 weeks of registration.

Cost: $145, includes a copy of the book to keep.

 CPR/FA + AED

RSU4 & LACE – Maine Safety Education

Students will gain knowledge and hands-on skills necessary to recognize and provide basic care for injuries and sudden illnesses, including heart attack, until advanced medical personnel can take over care of adults, children and infants. 

Classes are scheduled as interest is high enough; MIN of 6 students required.

RSU4/LACE October 6th, October 13th, and October 20th from 6pm-8pm

SUBSTITUTE TEACHING 

RSU4 & LACE – Jim Palmer 

Are you interested in becoming a substitute teacher, administrative support person, even a custodian or kitchen staff? This workshop will provide you with the basic knowledge, classroom behavior management and strategies for problem-solving. Workshop trainings are scheduled in small groups and during the day if scheduling allows.

COMMUNITY EVENTS

FAMILY LITERACY – StoryTime ADVENTURES

RSU4/LACE – held at Oak Hill High School, Monday 6-7pm

A read-along storytime is led by an Adult Education staff member. A hands-on activity is incorporated into our adventure that inspires imagination, helps increase comprehension and the application of age appropriate education standards, implemented by the MDOE. Accompanying adults will join in on this StoryTime Adventure, encouraging participation and conversation! 

This is a FREE event for both out-of-town families and town residents. 

Pre- Registration is REQUIRED; late registrations are accepted, however, planning and prep is required.

PERSONAL ENRICHMENTS

  FITNESS: Yoga for Beginners

Relax your mind and open your heart while firming your body.  This class is for those students who would like to sample a class – or perfect for those who already practice yoga and would like to deepen and refine their practice while learning more challenging poses.

Start Date:October 18th, October 25th, and November 1st 2022 for six weeks

Time: 6:00 – 7:00 pm

Fee: $55  

* Drop-ins welcome $12 per class.

* Yoga mats or towels are suggested to bring along to class

 Learn to play Pickleball

Come try your hand at one of the fastest growing sports in the country – Pickleball. Pickleball is a racquet sport that combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. This weekly clinic will be held in the Oak Hill High School gym and will consist of general instruction and open play. This class must be paid by check or cash.

Schedule: Monday October 18th, 25th, November 7th, and Thursday November 10th from 6:00 – 7:30 pm

Cooking with Boomer TECH Adventures

   

This course is made for you if you want to learn several new cooking techniques and try out a variety of recipes You will learn how to prepare several tasty stir fries using traditional Chinese flavorings, make fresh pasta, turn leftover sweet potato into gnocchi, stir up a great fried rice, and give ramen soup a delicious upgrade. In addition, discover an easy way to make your own pita pockets, flatbreads, and tortillas.

How to use your IPAD workshop

The Apple iPad is one of the most popular tablet computers on the market today. This course will teach you how to operate your iPad out of the box, walking you through setting it up and then introducing you to its many features. It doesn’t matter which generation of iPad you’re currently using – or if you even have access to one.   This course will teach you all you need to know to use any iPad now or in the future.

You’ll learn how to:

 

– Set up an iPad when you first get it out of the box.

– Sync your iPad to iTunes.

– Use the iPad as an iPod

– Take photos, organize pictures, and even edit your photographs.

This course covers all generations of the iPad in depth and walks you through step-by-step to teach you how to use the iPad like a pro.   At the end of each lesson, you’ll find exercises and assignments to quiz you on your knowledge and help you practice what you learn.   The iPad can be used in more ways and for more purposes than you can imagine. This course will introduce you to it all.

Instruction to Mac Basics (with boomer TECH)

 

This course is a step-by-step guide to learning to use your Mac computer. It is packed with easy-to-follow videos that explain and demonstrate how to use your Mac laptop or desktop computer. This course is made for you if you are just learning to use your Mac or if you already have a Mac but want to upgrade your skills and abilities. You will learn everything you need to know to get the most out of your Mac: Basic Mac features, browsers, communicating (text, email, FaceTime), organizing files and documents, best apps and the App Store, and much more. In addition to the step-by-step instructions for the five primary videos we provide additional videos and articles that will help you solve any questions about your Mac.

DRIVER EDUCATION

RSU4 – Oak Hill High School

 The course is required by State Law for anyone under the age of 18 to obtain a driver’s permit. 30 hours of classroom attendance and 10 hours of driving time is provided.  Students will learn the basics of controlling the car, management of time and space, parallel parking, interstate driving and more.  Please bring your proof of identification; name and DOB.

ME DRIVING DYNAMICS – Defensive Driving  

RSU4 & LACE – Dale Gilbert, ME Bureau of Motor Vehicles

This is a 5 hour course that offers all drivers the opportunity to improve their defensive driving skills. Course includes discussion of collision avoidance techniques, safety issues, driver habits and attitudes, and includes the basic elements that constantly challenge drivers on Maine’s roads and highways. Completing this course earns the participant a 3 point credit on their driving record with DMV. Students 65+ can receive a discount on the class as well as with their insurance provider.
